Svalbard Museum was lauded by the Council of Europe as the European museum of the year in 2008. The museum features a highly comprehensive collection of artefacts covering the 400 years of human activity since the archipelago’s discovery, and a modern display of the area’s flora and fauna. The museum’s gift shop stocks a large selection of Polar and Svalbard related literature.

Svalbard Museum is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm during the summer season for general admission. The museum operates with a cruise guarantee, whereby the opening hours are extended for the calls of all major cruise ships.
